Dive Medicals Brisbane
Obtaining a dive medical is vital for all persons desiring to participate in either recreational or commercial diving. Scuba diving is an exciting and demanding activity. When performed correctly, applying the correct techniques, it is relatively safe. If however, the diver has a pre-existing medical condition it can be dangerous, even fatal. Whilst underwater, any medical conditions or disorders can cause a diver to experience:
- Disorientation
- Impaired judgment
- Reduced mobility
- Loss of consciousness
- Decompression sickness
Diving can be strenuous under certain conditions. Participant’s lungs, heart and circulation must be in good health. As a safety requirement, all divers in Queensland are required by law to pass a Diving Medical Examination obtained within accordance to Australian Standards AS 4005.1 and guidelines set by SPUMS – The South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society
Dive Medical Examination
Here at Racecourse Road Health Centre in Brisbane, we conduct two kinds of Diving Medical Examinations – Recreational and Commercial. Each will take approximately 45 minutes. The medical consists of:
- Hearing/eyesight tests
- Urine test
- Lung function test
- Blood pressure test
- Height/weight measurements

Conducting Dive Medicals
A Dive Medical Examination cannot be performed by all General Practitioners, they can only be conducted by a Doctor who has obtained the approved training to medically examine recreational and occupational divers. Dr Peter Herbert has decades of experience and various degrees and post-graduate medical qualifications, including:
- Dive Medicals
- Aviation medicine
- Obstetrics
- Gynaecology
- Occupational/environmental medicine
- Travel/tropical medicine
Commercial Diving
Commercial diving occurs whenever underwater work is undertaken for profit or reward. This immediately makes the diving subject to the provisions of occupational health and safety legislation. Commercial diving could be considered any of the following:
- Diving at work
- Civils diving
- Professional diving
- Construction diving
- Oilfield diving
- Salvage diving
- Industrial diving
- Military diving
- Police Diving

Under most Australian diving legislation and AS/NZS 2299.1:2007, occupational divers are required to be trained in accordance with the provisions of the Standard and to have an ADAS certificate, other occupational diver training, or qualifications issued by the relevant regulatory authority.
